CLassroom Management
"Classroom Management involves teacher actions to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation." (David M. Byrd, 1994, p. 224)
Areas of Responsibility (Byrd 225-226)
-Selecting a philosophical model of classroom management and discipline (Having a plan) - students thrive on plans
-Organize the physical environment
-Manage students behavior
-Create a respectful and supportive learning environment
-Manage and facilitate instruction
-Promote classroom safety and wellness
-Interact with colleagues, families and others to achieve classroom management objectives
"(Getting to know your student's) sends a message to each student that the teacher sees him or her as an individual, and it also suggests that he or she is interesting enough for an adult to want to know better" (Carol Ann Tomlinson,2010, p. 78)
How to Prevent Misbehavior (Byrd 227-228)
-Maintain focus on your major tasks in teaching
-Understand your students needs and how to meet them
-Understand and respect ethnic/cultural differences
-Know what causes misbehavior and how to deal with those causes
-Provide clear rules and procedures to guide student conduct
-Have a specific plan for responding to misbehavior with a hierarchy of interventions
-Reduce the use of punitive methods of control
-Take actions to establish a cooperative, responsible classroom
-Involve students meaningfully in making decisions
-Teach critical social skills
-Involve families
How can it influence and attribute to differentiation?

Teachers may have some objections trying to incorporate differentiation into their elementary classrooms. Four of the common concerns are listed below
- Shouldn't students learn to follow each teacher's rules? Doesn't that gear them for college or the workforce?
- Some of these suggestions are contrary to some teachers natural style. They may not want to adopt these strategies.
- If we're meeting the needs of students with one preference, doesn't that mean that the needs of other students may go unmet?
How to handle your classroom
As a teacher, things will not always run smoothly. It is crucial to have a plan of action, if students misbehave in class and to remain consistent with your classroom management.
Being a differentiated instructor, you may sometimes need help controlling your class,
Here's what you can do if...
-It takes students too long to settle down
-Students don't take appropriate use of class time
-Students rush through work
-Transition poorly from one activity to another
-Students struggle to complete work
-Students are defiant
-Insulting other students
